Curriculum

Design 101TM is organized over five days, beginning with check in early on Monday morning, and concluding with a reception on the following Friday night.

The subject matter of the seminar focuses on four critical areas of design: periods, practitioners, principles, and practice. On each weekday, Monday through Friday, a different design discipline is covered. Monday: architecture; Tuesday: fashion. Wednesday: graphic design. Thursday: interior design. Friday: product design.

Morning through late afternoon of each day consists of classroom presentations and discussions led by distinguished design scholars covering a concise historical overview of the day's discipline, including:
  • identification of primary periods, styles, and movements associated with the discipline
  • identification of iconic practitioners
  • an introduction to the key principles that define the practice and culture of the discipline

Following the presentations and discussions there will be site visits to leading design studios in New York City. This experience will enable students to get a feel for the environments in which the five design disciplines are practiced.

At each site there will be a representative to provide a tour and also to lead the group through a critique of a current project. The critique will provide seminar participants with the opportunity to see the conceptual principles discussed earlier in the day applied to a real world situation.
